This epic Lucasfilm fantasy serves up enough magical adventure to satisfy fans of the genre, though it treads familiar territory. With abundant parallels to Star Wars, the story (by George Lucas) follows the exploits of the little farmer Willow (Warwick Davis), an aspiring sorcerer appointed to deliver an infant princess from the evil queen (Jean Marsh) to whom the child is a crucial threat. Val Kilmer plays the warrior who joins Willow's campaign with the evil queen's daughter (Joanne Whalley, who later married Kilmer). Impressive production values, stunning locations (in England, Wales, and New Zealand) and dazzling special effects energize the routine fantasy plot, which alternates between rousing action and cute sentiment while failing to engage the viewer's emotions. A parental warning is appropriate: director Ron Howard has a light touch aimed at younger viewers, but doesn't shy away from grisly swordplay and at least one monster (a wicked two-headed dragon) that could induce nightmares. --Jeff Shannon

2009-12-20 - This was purchased as a Christmas gift for my daughter. She recently saw this DVD through a rental arrangement and watched it 4times. Gave it to me to view and I was amazed that it took me back in that time period and was totally engrossed. What a fun film.
mmm... nostalgia
2009-12-13 - I remember watching this when it first came out... and then watching it again twenty years later. I was really young but remember this with much fondness, I thought it was such a cool movie. Even now, with all the special effects and what not that you find in movies, Willow really does stand out as a classic among its generation AND today. I enjoyed it just as much the last time I watched it as I did the first time, it was and still is such an awesome movie! If you're looking for a solid viewing experience, get this movie. You just can't go wrong. No, seriously.

2009-12-07 - Love this movie-watched it first so many years ago. I think it was Val's first or one of his first movies. I love this kind of movie. Fantasy movies are the best. It is funny, romantic and you will love it.
