Editorial Review:
By this time in her career, Whitney Houston had a formula sound, and here she leans on it hard, surrounding herself with adult contemporary heavy-hitters like Diane Warren and Babyface. This wasn't the monster her previous records were, most notably The Bodyguard soundtrack, even though it seems to be an overt attempt at satisfying the same audience. Her voice is as crystalline as ever, but overall it seems a somewhat soulless effort, even though the themes are much more secular than she's braved before. --Scott Wilson

The Preacher's Wife: Original Soundtrack Album Reviews:
A diamond in the rough... 4 Star Review
2009-10-07 - That's what I'd call this release from Whitney Houston. The soundtrack to her last motion picture to date, I had bought it about 10 years ago to complete my Whitney Houston discography, only to feel that it was probably her worst album (I even thought Just Whitney was better!) But I listened to it the other day, and found that a lot of the material on this release is actually very good.

Some of my favorite songs on this are "I Believe in You and Me" (a sweet ballad that could be a great wedding song), "Step By Step" (irresistibly catchy), "I Go to the Rock" (the chorus gives me chills), "You Were Loved" (a beautiful and moving song that is my favorite on this album), and "Somebody Bigger than You and I" (a fantastic collaboration). But the album as a whole has a very uplifting feel to it, and just gives you faith when you're feeling down. I'm not a very religious person, but even I feel spiritual when hearing some of these songs.

Admittedly, though, Whitney sounds a bit detached throughout the duration of the album. To be honest, I think she did this more for the money than for the art of it. Also, gospel is a more esoteric genre of music than her pop/r&b/adult contemporary niche, which makes it hard to have as broad a fan base as her past material.

But still, if you give the album time to grow on you, you may find it to be one of the obscure classics of the 90s, even it was more about the money this time around. As for the movie, well, it's pleasant but it's no Gone With the Wind.

It was good, but on the average side for me! 3 Star Review
2009-03-23 - I remember when this movie and the singles came out they were huge! But I honestly think this album is ok. My sister used to love this cd when she was a kid and would listen to it over and over again. I thought she was crazy! Haha, I actually was living in california this summer and this was one of the few cd's I had to listen to(long story short, my music subscription got cancelled). I actually liked step by step. I thought was average, but a great inspriational song. I like I believe in you and Me simply for nostalgia from when I was a kid. It's a great song and it's got a great message. I thought Joy to the world was so-so, I go to the rock, all the gospel tracks were ok. Somebody else could have sang those and they propably would have sounded ok. I'm reviewing this as a whitney album because she's only came out with 5 cd's(her own material not soundtracks) in 25+ years. She's done better stuff. I just think she was really going off of her name at this point just like Madonna.

Hey Scott Wilson, editorial reviewer 5 Star Review
2009-03-17 - Dear Scott Wilson, Mr. Editorial Reviewer:
To begin with, let me start with a direct quote from your review. "Her voice is as crystalline as ever, but overall it seems a somewhat soulless effort, even though the themes are much more secular than she's braved before." Scott, this is one of the finest examples of contemporary Gospel music one can find in terms of production, musicianship, arrangement (all of which are air tight), and overall performance by none other than Whitney Houston. That takes care of the "somewhat soulless effort" part of your review. More importantly, perhaps you should look up the meaning of the word "secular" before you publish it in a way that demonstrates that you understand it to mean its opposite. There are a few secular songs included in this recording, but we know what you meant. I just had to point that out.
At the foundation of it all, this recording has blessed me very much. I highly recommend it for any lover of great music created with love and passion. It will move you.

2008-07-25 - The music for the Preachers Wife with Whitney Houston was very good.It takes your mind back to the movie as it should, some time when you buy sound tracks to movies they do not co-inside with each other. That is not the case with this sound track.
