SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: THE BEST OF WILL FE (DVD MOVIE)
Description of Saturday Night Live - The Best of Will Ferrell - Volume 2:
There is no drop-off in laughs from the first to second volume of Will Ferrell's work on Saturday Night Live. Giggle along with his recurring characters, including James Lipton (interviewing Kate Hudson as a wonderfully ditzy Drew Barrymore), a wickedly clever George W. Bush, and one-half of the smarmy Lovers couple. This volume spotlights Ferrell's ability to go successfully over-the-top whether as an overbearing boss (check out how long he keeps stabbing a doomed coworker), a strict airplane pilot, an absent-minded doctor, or the world's oldest baby. There's plenty of unabashed (near) nudity and risky violence, which keeps the SNL tradition of "Not Ready for Prime Time"; check out what longtime hosts of the morning talk show resort to when the much-needed teleprompter fails. All that plus "Janet Reno's Dance Party" (with guest Rudy Giuliani) makes this the perfect pick-up for those who could not get enough of Ferrell with volume 1. --Doug Thomas
Saturday Night Live - The Best of Will Ferrell - Volume 2 Reviews:
For intellectuals and morons only
2009-12-24 - The first "Best Of" for Will Ferrell included mostly crowd-pleasing favorite sketches and characters. But this second disc is really the Ferrell I remember most, but never appears in his movies. This is Ferrell as the subversive and violently dark shock comedian. He evokes the All-American everyman ofBill Murray and Chevy Chase, with the explosive fun and dangerously crude elements of Chris Farley or Norm MacDonald.
Most of these sketches have one joke and go on and on. But I feel that was an artistic choice. The writing may seem loose and juvenile, but it allows Ferrell to show his strengths as a performer and really push the edge of sketch comedy. This disc shows Ferrell is an anti-humorist and anarchist at heart. The sketch where Ferrell plays a crazy doctor who has misplaced a couple's baby is reminiscent of Monty Python or the original SNL. Very surreal, tragic, aggressive and FUNNY.
The material here is so satirical and subversive that most fans will not comprehend. Many will not realise the joke is on THEM. Ferrell usually plays sexist, racist, tempermental, authoritative, Middle American maniacs in these sketches. The only sketch on the first edition to include this kind of character would be the "Dodge Stratus" scene. He's taking the most disturbing side of Americana and playing it for laughs. When he attacks a black employee and tells him "You crazy black man! I'm gonna make you drink my piss!" The audience is laughing at the sheer absurdity and offensiveness. But he's revealing the twisted psychosis of the American white power structure and Alpha male dominance. And for that, this is a classic comedy release with moments of genius. IT DOES NOT PLAY FOR STRAIGHT LAUGHS. This is not a crowd-pleaser!
Save Your Money: Watch Volume One Again
2009-05-11 - Will Ferrell is a very talented guy, and I enjoyed his first volume in the Saturday Night Live series. Despite my enthusiasm for Ferrell in general, I started watching volume two bearing in mind that rarely is a sequel better than the original. This is a case study proving the point.
With such a large Ferrell library available from the SNL archives, the selection of skits here is poor at best. I enjoyed "Janet Reno's Dance Party" and "Inside the Actor's Studio," but that was about it. The extras featuring guest appearances on television talk shows were better than the balance of the skits. I generously gave the DVD two stars: one for each of the funny sketches.
This is an extremely disappointing follow up to volume one, and that's less a reflection on Ferrell than on the staff picking these specific, generally un-funny, segments. Despite the low price of this DVD, I, in all seriousness, recommend simply watching volume one again and saving your money. An alternative would be to purchase a Ferrell movie ("Elf," for instance) that packs far more laughs per minute than this over-edited and under-funny disc.
Not as good as Volume 1
2009-04-03 - This is of course a good addition to all Will Ferrell lover's collections, but I found Volume 1 to be a lot funnier than Volume 2. Would recommend it, but like most sequels it comes up a little short.
Not worth it...
2008-05-13 - After reading everyones reviews, I was very iffy about purchasing the second dvd. I really wanted to watch it for myself so I found it for very cheap on ebay... and yes... all the bad reviews are pretty much correct.
I'm not used to doing a bad review... but this was pretty disappointing. Maybe because I watched it after the first one... which was awsome... this one left me with no laughs and a "THATS IT??" It basically had the full versions of the short clips that were in the first dvd.
It was sad...
Great DVD
2008-01-14 - If you like Will Ferrell then you will love this dvd. He is my favorite on SNL ,Comedy at it's best.
