Editorial Review:
Will Ferrell stars in Semi-Pro, an outrageous comedy set in 1976 against the backdrop of the maverick ABA - a fast-paced, wild and crazy basketball league that rivaled the NBA and made a name for itself with innovations like the three-point shot and slam dunk contest. Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, a one-hit wonder who used the profits from the success of his chart-topping song "Love Me Sexy" to achieve his dream of owning a basketball team. But Moon's franchise, the Flint Michigan Tropics, is the worst team in the league and in danger of folding when the ABA announces its plans to merge with the NBA. If they want to survive, Jackie and the Tropics must now do the seemingly impossible - win.
Description of Semi-Pro [Blu-ray]:
The 1970s are back in all their excessive glory in Semi-Pro, an uneven but not uninspired Will Ferrell comedy about a professional basketball team that puts more energy into insane promotional schemes than playing well on the court. Ferrell stars as Jackie Moon, a former pop sensation who made enough money from a couple of hit records (the biggest: "Love Me Sexy") to buy Flint, Mich.'s the Tropics, a disorganized bunch of losers with one genuine talent named Coffee Black (Andre J. Benjamin). Despite knowing little about the game, Jackie is the Tropics' coach as well as a player, though his greater love is in coming up with such bizarre marketing stunts as wrestling a bear and attempting a motorcycle jump over a line of cheerleaders. When the Tropics look like they might be shut down, Jackie desperately agrees to let washed-up veteran player Monix (Woody Harrelson) take over coaching, turning the team's fortunes around--just a bit. The film's thin premise opens the floodgates to a series of absurd vignettes that suit Ferrell's silly-satiric brand of frat humor very well. There are choice moments, such as Jackie's table-shoving tantrum at a meeting of team owners (presided over by an aghast but tolerant commissioner, adroitly played by David Koechner), and his rapid escape from the Tropics' arena when he realizes everyone in the stands has won free corndogs (at Jackie's expense). Other performers shine, too, including Will Arnett and Andrew Daly as a glass-half-full/glass-half-empty pair of game announcers, and Maura Tierney as Monix's former love interest. The script is by Scot Armstrong (The Heartbreak Kid), and the film is the first directorial effort of producer Kent Alterman (Mr. Woodcock). --Tom Keogh
Semi-Pro [Blu-ray] Reviews:
very disappointing
2009-12-14 - I'm a huge Will Farrell fan, and had been watching anything he did at all. Even movies that looked terrible like "Anchorman" and "Blades of Glory" were entertaining.
For a time it seemed like everything he touched would be great. Well, that time has come to an end. Semi-Pro simply isn't funny. It's not really sports movie either. It's just a paycheck vehicle from a group of people that knew I'd be enough of a sucker to watch it.
This movie was just 90 boring minutes that couldn't end fast enough. I'll probably still watch the next Will Farrell movie, but at least I know now he can make very bad ones.
Good Cast-Funny Movie
2009-09-14 - Semi-Pro is yet another funny movie starring Will Ferrell to have come out in recent years and sure enough it too is reminiscent of his characters in Old School, Step Brothers, and the Wedding Crasher. The movie is set in 1976 where as player, coach, and owner of the ABA team the Michigan Tropics, not to mention choreographer, disco singer, and announcer, Jackie Moon is faced with the prospect of losing his beloved team after the league agreed with the NBA to a merger that will allow only the top four ABA teams to join the prestigious association while the rest are to dissolve.
Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, and the rest of the cast, have done a great with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least!
Very well written and very well presented, it allows for a highly entertaining movie that will surely provide for more than just a few laughs.
In short, Semi-Pro is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection (if you haven't done so already), especially if you are Will Ferrell fan.
what you'd expect
2009-09-04 - This isn't a great movie, but it's pretty good. It's what you'd expect from Will Farrell. It's stupid, vulgar, silly, and sometimes pointless. If you've seen one of his movies in the part, you've seen this one; it just has a different title and script.
If you're a Will Farrell fan, you'll enjoy this. If not, maybe not. Better than a lot of movies out there.
I would recommend this if you're looking for stupid humor without a lot of social commentary or deep meaning.
Almost Okay
2009-08-11 - I'm not a fan of Will Ferrell's film career. But from his days on SNL, I know there is some mediocre talent under the ego and cheap laughs.
This film suffers in the same way films like "Walk Hard" and Apatow comedies do. The movie is full of lazy joke-writing and plenty of hammy comedians not doing anything. You'll see plenty of Mad TV, SNL and Upright Citizens members in these films and they all seem unmotivated.
There are a few clever moments spread out through the movie and it has the typical "heart-warming" storyline kick in too late in the film. Hopefully, when these type of juvenile comedies are no longer bankable, we'll see Ferrell hungry again and centered on making us laugh, instead of trying to hard to make us like him.
Consistent Like A Shaq Free Throw
2009-08-03 - Synopsis: It's 1976 in Flint, Michigan. Jackie Moon (Will Ferrell) owns, operates, and plays for the Flint Tropics, which is the laughing stock of the American Basketball Association. Upon hearing the news that there will be a merger between the ABA and the NBA, Moon rejoices... until he hears that only the best teams will make the merger while the others will fold. Distressed, Jackie starts to inspire his group to be better, which includes bringing in veteran player Ed Monix (Woody Harrelson) to help fortify the playing style of the emerging Coffee Black (Andre Benjamin). Will the team succeed long enough to make it to the NBA?
Now, you can't all expect them to be hits with Will Ferrell and this is definitely an example of that. The jokes were tired after a while and while an uplifting story, it just seemed quite dull in comparison to the other comedies that have been recently released. I'd recommend it to die-hard fans of The Frat Pack, but other movie viewers probably won't enjoy it as much.
