  • Editorial Review:
Molly Shannon, the latest Saturday Night Live comic to have a movie built around her, isn't exactly funny--in fact, she's a little unsettling. Her creation, the neurotic Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher, invites laughter because she's a little too close to the bone for anyone who grew up feeling ugly and unloved, which is a lot of people. Mary lives with her grandmother (Glynis Johns), who insists that Mary study business. Mary herself yearns to be famous and admired, though for what isn't exactly clear; she envisions some vague combination of singing, dancing, and acting that will make her a superstar. A talent show promises to be her ticket to stardom (the winning prize is a role in "a movie with positive moral values"), and she won't let her loser status or any hostile cheerleaders stand in her way. Meanwhile, Mary acts out dating fantasies with trees and signposts, envisions the school lunch room bursting into a Fame-like dance number, and longs for the biggest jock in school. What makes Superstar more than just a collection of bad high school memories is that, though the formulaic plot redeems Mary, the movie as a whole isn't so sure. Mary completely loses herself in her obsessive fantasies--many inspired by cheesy made-for-TV movies--but there's always someone watching, aghast, as Mary acts out her inner thoughts. Is she misunderstood or freakish? Superstar never commits to one side or the other, which makes it both comic and uncomfortable. --Bret Fetzer

    Superstar [Region 2] Reviews:
You know what it's time for... Supermodel documentary hour! 3 Star Review
2009-09-30 - Molly Shannon developed the character of Mary Katherine Gallagher for Saturday Night Live! There isn't really enough material to expand the sketch to a full length movie, but they made a valiant effort. Hey, it worked for Wayne's World.

Parts are funny, but like Mary Katherine Gallagher's auditions, a lot of parts just fall flat. Mary works as a video store rewind girl, and that provides her the opportunity to watch tons of films, classic and trashy. She memorizes parts and then says things like, "my feelings are best expressed by this dramatic monologue from ________ (insert classic yet incongruous movie title here).

Will Ferrell plays a dual role, and is perhaps funnier in his second role. Tom Green doesn't have much to do, and frankly that is a blessing. Emmy Laybourne was great in a little bit as Helen Lewengrub, Mary's friend from Special Ed. At a boring assembly, they amuse themselves by playing Supermodel documentary hour. Though it was just an interlude that did nothing to advance the plot, it was nevertheless a most pleasant excursion.

No need for a sequel, the material has already been stretched thin enough. I confess that I liked parts of this, but it would be a sin to say that this is a great movie.

after all these years, still a funny ...funny movie! 4 Star Review
2009-09-14 - Molly Shannon is hilarious; it's outrageous that when you Google" super star", you get Tom Cruise... Life is so unfair!!
Anyway, back to business; Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell are sooo awesome in this movie, so you many "dare to dream" but watch the movie and keep it for your kids.

the Good Ole days. 4 Star Review
2009-04-09 - Superstar! Ah The good ole days of SNL. When it was actually Funny and made sense, of course all good things must come to an end. While this movie is not perfect, it is funny,Harland Williams,Shannon ,Ferrell. I miss the old Molly Shannon.

SOME FUNNY MOMENTS BUT..................! 2 Star Review
2009-02-01 - What do you get when you take a 3 minute SNL skit and make a full length feature film out of it? Answer - SUPERSTAR! I really don't want to come down too hard on this goofy, but harmless film, because it does have it's moments. Molly Shannon and Co. do what they can with this mildly disturbing comedy with a predictable story. I rate it 2 stars in a good way!?....if that makes any sense.
