  • Editorial Review:
This animated feature-length life of Jesus boasts a stellar pedigree. Originally a BBC: Wales production, it showcases the voices of some of Britain's finest actors in any medium: Ralph Fiennes as a brooding and humble Jesus, Miranda Richardson as Mary Magdalene, Richard E. Grant as John the Baptist, and David Thewlis as Judas. The lovely, flute-heavy score is by Oscar winner Anne Dudley (The Full Monty). And clearly a lot of expense has gone into the Claymation-like animation. But while it's hard to find fault with the rendering of this familiar story--it's respectful and definitely done, you might say, by the Book--it would have been nice if there had been a tad more joy, if it walked a bit lighter in its sandals. As it is, all the characters seem consistently subdued, whether they're expressing angst, rage, terror, or bliss--none of which is helped by the figures' blank-eyed stares (if animators are becoming ever more sophisticated, why can't they get rid of those creepy Charlie McCarthy gazes once and for all?). Still, the weight of having such formidable actors play these familiar roles lends the production a certain credibility, and parents looking for good religious videos that won't insult their kids' intelligence will be thrilled. --Anne Hurley

The Miracle Maker - The Story of Jesus Reviews:
Buy this movie 5 Star Review
2009-11-27 - This is my favorite film depicting the life of jesus. great for adults to enjoy too! i highly recommend it and have purchased it for several friends' children. A different approach and some great humor too.

Miracle Maker turns Jesus into the tempter 1 Star Review
2009-11-15 - I cannot recommend this movie due to its blasphemous depiction of Jesus at the Last Supper.
Watch the Last Supper scene again and pay careful attention to how they depict Jesus ordering Judas to go and do what he HAS to do. He does this several times to a seemingly reluctant Judas.

Jesus to Judas: "Judas, go and do what you have to do".
    Judas' reply, "Master?"
Jesus to Judas: "While you have the chance."
Judas looks down at the table.
Jesus to Judas: "Go on, go and do it."
Judas still looking down at the table.
Jesus to Judas: "Go and do it quickly"
Judas appears overpowered and stammers trying to get out of it "Master, I . . " and then slowly and sadly leaves (apparently obeying) as if he has just been ordered to do something he would rather not do and betray his God.

Why has nobody else had a problem with this scene.

This is a terrible reinterpretation of the Gospel of John's 'Satan entered into him . Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly."'
It is what Judas had already decided and resolved to do indicated by Satan entering him, not what he HAD to do or what Jesus repeatedly ordered him to do as if he had no choice in his actions.

In the Miracle Maker movie, it is like Jesus is doing the tempting in place of Satan and ordering Judas to sin when it appears Judas would rather not do this or has not yet made up his mind and is only being obedient.

God does not want men to sin and perish. Luke's and John's gospels indicate Satan entering into Judas when the decision has already made. That is before Jesus indicates to Judas that his cover is blown and that he should leave in John's Gospel.

The Last Supper is a crucial scene and the Miracle Maker film makers have twisted this badly. This portrayal would be disturbing in any movie, much less one that would indoctrinate kids with their first impressions of Jesus. I cannot recommend this movie which otherwise had promise.

I am throwing my Miracle Maker DVD out with the next load of trash.

Very Good Family Easter movie 4 Star Review
2009-04-28 - I teach 6th grade Religious Ed. And I am always looking for good movies that are within the Catholic based beliefs. This movie was highly recommended by Relevant Radio (a Catholic Radio Station)as a good family movie. I no longer have children at home, but my husband and I enjoyed the movie. It is animated but very well done. I also really enjoy the "making of the movie."
