Editorial Review:
SPECIAL EXTENDED EDITION! Peter Benchley, the master of sea terror, returns with another tale of aquatic mayhem in this three hour uncut version. With almost 80 minutes of restored scenes previously edited from earlier release, this is the original version, nominated for two Prime Time Emmys. Stars William L. Petersen (CSI).
The Beast (Two-Disc Special Extended Version) Reviews:
great
2009-10-29 - you were as usal very helpfull and as always i enjoyed the movie as much as doing bussiness with amazon
Another Tale of Aquatic Mayhem
2009-09-09 - William Peterson (C.S.I.) faces one of the ocean's fiercest predators in the 1996 made-for-television film "The Beast". A series of mysterious deaths leads to the discovery of a giant squid inhabiting the waters near the small seaport village of Graves Point. When a group of fisherman hunt and slain its offspring, the monstrous squid seeks revenge. "The Beast" is fairly enjoyable creature feature based on the novel by best-selling author Peter Benchley. The movie isn't as memorable as "Jaws" but it's certainly more amusing than other cheesy sea monster movies like "Tentacles" (1977). The story bears numerous similarities with the author's previous novel. Even the musical score and cliché characters are somewhat similar. The movie is not particularly scary but does have some good moments. The visual effects are decent for a TV movie. For the most part, Peterson manages to keep the movie afloat. "The Beast" also stars Karen Sillas, Ronald Guttman, Missy Cider, Larry Drake and Charles Martin Smith.
"The Beast" 2-disc Special Extended Version wins my vote for the simplest bare-bones DVD that I've seen in years. The made-for-TV movie is presented in its original full screen broadcast format and includes 80 minutes of previously edited scenes from the original version. Both picture and audio are satisfactory. The interactive menus are unimpressive. There are no special features. If you're a serious collector, you may want to hold out on picking up this release. Overall, "The Beast" 2-disc Special Extended Version gets a "C-".
For Giant Squid Enthusiasts
2009-08-25 - I have read about giant squids. One book said that a giant squid's eye is as big as a dinner plate! The dead ones shown in the photographs one sees are limited in their ability to show the power of this elusive creature.
Peter Benchley's fictional book presents a fascinating story. This movie allows you to get some idea of what a giant squid might be like. I don't know that giant squids "hunt" at surface level, but it is an enjoyable movie to watch regardless.
Good story. Well acted. Special effects acceptable.
A BEASTly Good Time !
2009-06-15 - We watched the 2-part, 3 hour version of this adaption of the Peter Benchley novel and just had a rollickin' good time! I'm a sucker for any giant creature movies, and every now and then I'm rewarded for my diligence in seeking them out with a really good production. Fortunately, there were many positive viewer reviews for this DVD (be sure to get this extended 2 disc version!) and so I'd like to throw in my enthusiastic two cents. Good cast, good story, good effects and an excellent music score add up to a very good movie. Check it out!
I liked it.
2009-05-31 - This is not an Oscar winner by a long shot. I rented a version from Netflix and liked it. I don't know what the difference between that version and the purchased one, but I'm going to find out. This movie was strangely addictive. After watching it the first time, I wanted to watch it again.
This is an flawed movie, but it appeared that the actors were having fun doing it. There was great chemistry between Petersen who played Capt. Whip Dalton and the young woman, Missy Crider, who played his daughter, Dana.
I did not feel much chemistry between Petersen and Karen Sillas who played the love interest, Lt Kathryn Marcus of the U.S. Coast Guard. Other wise the movie was fun and a nice distraction.
Over all, I would recommend this movie and wouldn't be afraid to let my 10 year old watch it unsupervised.
