Editorial Review:
Before he was the author of such books as 'A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other: The Story of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon,' 'Touched By Magic: The Tommy Bolin Story,' and 'Grunge is Dead: The Oral History of Seattle Rock Music,' Greg Prato was a writer for such respected UK-based publications as Classic Rock, Guitarist, Metal Hammer, and Record Collector. 'No Schlock...Just Rock!' collects most of Greg's writing for these mags between a five-year span (2003-2008), with the focus on the crème de la crème of classic rock, heavy metal, and punk/alt-rock. Included are features that explore the entire careers of Faith No More, Soundgarden, Bad Brains, Meat Puppets, The Cars, The Raspberries, and GG Allin, as well as additional interviews/articles on the Ramones, Cheap Trick, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Jethro Tull, Rush, King Crimson, Steely Dan, William Shatner, and Run-DMC (among many others), plus the 3 articles that later led to Greg's Melon, Bolin, and Grunge books.
No Schlock...Just Rock! Reviews:
Classic Compilation of excellent rock articles.
2009-11-05 - A very interesting and eclectic collection of bands are represented here. That's what I like most about this book. I like all different musical styles and the author manages to put them all together in one cohesive compendium. You would think that a book couldn't seamlessly weave articles about Joni Mithchell and GG Allin together but its all here and feels right. Some of the highlights include articles on King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix, Faith No More, Soundgarden, Bad Brains, Queen, Metallica, and William Shatner. Stories behind such classics as Rush's Spirit of Radio and The Ramones' Blitzkrieg Bop. Also of note are articles on the Isle of Wight festival from 1970 with many interviews and an article on Scott Ian's life story. Buy this book!
No Schlock.. Just Rock..... Rocks!!!!!
2009-10-14 - Hey rock fans...My book just came in the mail and was able to read through a few select chapters on bands that have been long time favorites. So I'm still in the process of reading...But I really enjoyed those chapters, some are just short segments or reviews on the bands from over the years...... But there seems to be a little bit for everyone to take in, from Classic Rock to Metal and even a bit from the Punk Rock Scene with write ups on the Ramones and the Dead Boys. Looking forward to reading the rest and have enjoyed Gregs style of writing since reading Grunge is Dead and Touched by Magic: The Tommy Bolin Story along with current articles in the various magazines that Greg writes for........... so if your a rock fan I think you will enjoy the book.....
