Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 3 [Blu-ray] Reviews:
Yes, the packaging is kooky
2009-12-18 - So what? Well, admittedly I was frightened when I saw the top sticker label say "The Best of Star Trek Season 3" etcetera. Well that was clearly a mistake, because this is the ENTIRE Season 3 of The Original Series on Blu Ray.
And yes, the case is half as thick as the other two seasons', but it holds all six discs of the entire set just fine.
I'm not reviewing the series here, because the episodes number in the dozens, likely of varying quality, and I have not seen them yet, and they can be meticulously picked apart in the likely hundreds of reviews on the DVD versions. But these are separated because they are Blu Ray---expected to be of superior picture quality.
Well this set does its best, and follows like the previous two seasons, complete with the option to switch back and forth between the original episode's effects, and the Remastered versions that came out a few years ago. It also has a bunch of spiffy special effects, and the whole episode "The Cage", both remastered and spiffed up, and the TV version released in 1980 or so with the half-black and white. And it has an alternate version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before"
It also comes with a special code to unlock the Wrath of Khan-era uniform for "Star Trek Online", should you wish to pre-order the game.
WOW!
2009-12-18 - I was at 1st a little leery about buying this set as I already have it on DVD. Now that I have it all I can say is WOW! I realy enjoy being able to switch back and forth between the original and the enhanced versions. While the picture quality was realy cleaned up vs the DVD version, the audio and special effects enhancements realy add to my viewing pleasure. For those worried that they would realy fubar everything there realy was no need to worry.
If there is a negative in this set it would have to be the way the menus are setup, I think they realy could have been don e a lot better. However this didnt distract me very long.
Now my only remaining concern is trying to sell my Star Trek Original season 1-3 sets.
The BEST of Star Trek VOL. 3?
2009-12-16 - When reading the security label across the top of the Slim Line box. I noticed it
read "The (Best) of the original series (Vol).3" The Best of, Vol. 3. I havent
purchased the set yet so I'm not sure. Is the the COMPLETE season 3. Don't Like the
slim line box that doesnt match the first two sets at all. I'll remember Paramount
how you cheapened things up at the end of this series when you market "THe Next Generation"
in Blu Ray and wait to buy the compete set or at least matching ones when you offer the last season.
......
2009-12-16 - 3rd Season. Similar set up as the two previous season Blu-rays. As another reviewer noted, the case which holds 6 discs instead of 7, is oddly half as thick as the previous seasons. They saved a little plastic and a few pennies, but I would have preferred a matching blu-ray case.
The shows themselves are restored like the first two seasons. As long time viewers know, the third season production is not at the same level of quality overall as the first and second. Sure the episodes look better than ever before.
The original complete pilot The Cage is here in beautiful color HD on the last disc. With original and updated effects.
Also the black and white version of The Cage is included on the disc, a version that Roddenberry used to go around showing audiences, and includes Roddenberry giving an introduction from the 80s. This is a slightly longer edit that they do not have any other copies of. This version has not been remastered, and is not in HD but 480p.
The second pilot Where No Man Has Gone Before is also here in it's original unaired form, in HD with original effects. Different opening, different theme song, a few different edits.
The starfleet access running commentaries don't seem to be here in the third season. The new special effects are a mixed bag as with the first two seasons, very good when subtle without big changes IMO.
A rather large gripe
2009-12-13 - Once again I am displeased with a series that changes the packaging mid release. Since all three seasons of Star Trek were released in the same year it shouldn't have been an issue here but it is. The season three box is a slimline Blu-ray case and doesn't match the first two. Come on! Some fans want their sets to match up like they should. Is that too much to ask?
