Yul Brynner stars as the legendary figure of the Bible in King Vidor's only contribution to this popular 1950s genre. When aged King David (Finlay Currie) has a vision from God telling him that Solomon should succeed him as ruler of the Israelites David heeds His word. This angers his martial brother Adonijah (George Sanders) who threatens to wrest the throne from his younger brother. Israel thrives under the reign of the wise king and its success creates uneasiness among the powerful kingdoms of the region. The pharaoh conspires with Sheba (Gina Lollobrigida) granting her access to the Red Sea that she might beseige Solomon with her charm thereby luring the ruler to his doom. Solomon is dazzled by the queen's beauty and quickly falls under her sway. As the king's attention is turned away from the Lord and the welfare of his people the country begins to deteriorate. The Lord finally expresses his displeasure with the prevailing atmosphere of licentiousness by destroying the Temple of Jehovah. The chastened Solomon grasps the error of his ways and a transformed Sheba decides to convert to Judaism. SOLOMON AND SHEBA is the great director's final film and while it might not be up to the standard he set with DUEL IN THE SUN THE BIG PARADE and THE CHAMP it has an undeniably entertaining camp value that makes it worth watching.System Requirements:Running Time: 142 mins. Classics
2009-10-05 - This is one of my favorite movies of all time. The DVD is great. The color, picture and sound is great. The cast and their clothing is beautifull.
Underrated film
2009-09-29 - The problems in Solomon and Sheba have nothing to do with Yul Brynner, who gives an excellent performance. The problems lay in the miscasting of George Sanders, too old to play Solomon's brother, and of David Farrar, too British to play Pharaoh. The battle scenes are underwhelming, and King Vidor often directs like he's back in the silent era. There is a very silly orgy sequence and a ridiculous close-up of Sanders on the battlefield. Even if Tyrone Power had not died, the problem was still Vidor.
beautiful cinematography, superb scenes, full of action, and a biblical message. 
2009-08-20 - i first time i saw this movie was when i was in grade school sometime in 1958 or 1960. and it was only 2009 when i saw it again on dvd. it's great to see this movie again and bring back memories. all i can remember during the first time i saw it is the scene wherein solomon's armies were outnumbered and they had to use their shields to reflect the sun's rays in order that they can blind their enemies, that is the one scene that is still vivid in my memory and i cannot await to see it again this time on dvd. i had a special crush on gina lollobrigida when i was young and she was my fantasy during my younger days. the movie was well directed. cinematography is great. action scenes were great. romantic scenes were also great. the production sets were superb. but the best part of the movie was towards the ending when the real message of the bible was really revealed. that ending portion put tears in my eyes. that was the whole message of the movie and it was worth knowing it at the end of the movie. this movie should be shown in all bible classes in all schools.
ENOUGH OF THE BACKSTORY CRAPOLA!
2009-07-22 - The movie did NOT star Tyrone Power, it starred Yul Brynner (NOT Yule to the dipstick who wrote that). So why judge the finished product by Monday morning quarterbacking the released movie with useless "what ifs?"
As Solomon himself would undoubtedly say,"WHATBUNCHA SCHMUCKS!"
