Editorial Review:
For sheer pageantry and spectacle, few motion pictures can claim to equal the splendor of Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 remake of his epic The Ten Commandments. Filmed in Egypt and the Sinai with one of the biggest sets ever constructed for a motion picture, this version tells the story of the life of Moses (Charlton Heston), once favored in the Pharaoh's (Yul Brynner) household, who turned his back on a privileged life to lead his people to freedom. With a rare on-screen introduction by Cecil B. DeMille himself, this unforgettable movie experience is enhanced by a Dolby surround stereo soundtrack.
Description of The Ten Commandments (50th Anniversary Collection):
Legendary silent film director Cecil B. DeMille didn't much alter the way he made movies after sound came in, and this 1956 biblical drama is proof of that. While graced with such 1950s niceties as VistaVision and Technicolor, The Ten Commandments (DeMille had already filmed an earlier version in 1923) has an anachronistic, impassioned style that finds lead actors Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner expressively posing while hundreds of extras writhe either in the presence of God's power or from orgiastic heat. DeMille, as always, plays both sides of the fence as far as sin goes, surrounding Heston's Moses with worshipful music and heavenly special effects while also making the sexy action around the cult of the Golden Calf look like fun. You have to see The Ten Commandments to understand its peculiar resonance as an old-new movie, complete with several still-impressive effects such as the parting of the Red Sea. --Tom Keogh
The Ten Commandments (50th Anniversary Collection) Reviews:
"BEHOLD HIS MIGHTY HAND." A Spectacle For The Ages.
2009-12-16 - Cecil B. DeMille's final movie is his greatest achievement, a remake of the first half of his epic "The Ten Commandments," originally filmed in 1923 (which is included in this 3-Disc Collector's Edition in its entirety). With an all-star cast, authentic locations and a staggering amount of costumes, this movie is film-making at its greatest (though "Gone With The Wind" is also an example of marvelous movie magic). Charlton Heston stars in-dare I say it?-the role of a lifetime, as Moses, the leader of Israel. (He would go on to even greater fame as the title character in "Ben-Hur" 3 years later). The supporting cast is also excellent: Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, Edward G. Robinson, Vincent Price (in a rare non-horror movie role), Debra Paget, John Derek, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, John Carradine, Nina Foch, Martha Scott & H.B. Warner round out the main cast members. The movie is a classic. You never notice the time going by as you watch this 3 hour, 40 minute spectacle. Included in ths must-have collection is the original 1923 silent film (which is shorter than the main feature), a 37 minute, VI part documentary on the 1956 movie, newsreel footage of the 1956 premiere, a feature-length commentary on the 1956 movie, trailers and hand-tinted color footage of the Exodus & Red Sea sequences from the 1923 movie. Rated G (the special features are Not Rated).
Widescreen Only
2009-12-02 -
"50th Anniversary Collection" comes only in Widescreen format. No fullscreen.
Amazon advertises the "50th Anniversary Collection" comes with a fullscreen option under "format". However, Amazon means only the additional, silent-film is fullscreen, not both films. I wanted fullscreen, but was misled.
Otherwise, this is a five-star epic.
The Ballad of Josie
2009-11-27 - I brought this disc from you which is a copy of a copy that cuts off in the middle of the picture. In order for me to finish seeing it, I have to pause and fast-forward the section. I am very disappointed with this product. I wrote you to see if you could do something about it. I never heard from you. Very poor customer service.
An enduring classic epic
2009-11-07 - The Ten Commandments DVD (1956) with Charlton Heston.
Charlton Heston will always be remembered as Moses and this old film is an enduring classic.
It probably can never be equalled even with all the modern CGI and special effects and to repeat myself, is an enduring classic of biblical cinematograpahy.
Its long, its basic, no computer animation, but it's a great film.
So let it be written.
2009-10-31 - Our 6 year old daughter is fascinated by this and watches it repeatedly. We enjoy it with her.
