Surf's Up is a computer-animated sports mockumentary about penguin surfing contests, which makes it stand out from the crowd of penguin movies. The story unfolds as it would on ESPN, with interviews (with penguins) overlapping footage of (penguin) surfing action, gradually unveiling the tale of Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf, Holes), a young penguin from Antarctica with dreams of winning a surfing competition--a competition named after his idol, the missing Big Z (Jeff Bridges, The Big Lebowski). But when he joins the competition, Cody finds his zeal for winning may not be enough to defeat the cruel reigning champ, Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader, Grim & Evil). The story of Surf's Up is typical stuff: Youngster learns to value friendship over material success. But the documentary style gives the movie a different rhythm from the usual feature-length cartoon; it stutters and skips around, dithers on side topics, and backtracks to catch up with supporting characters. Some viewers may be annoyed, but others--perhaps the more media-savvy--will find it a refreshing change of pace. (Kids who don't watch much sports, however, may just find it confusing.) Surf's Up also features the voices of James Woods (Hercules), Zooey Deschanel (Elf), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). --Bret Fetzer

Hilarious 
2008-10-08 - Absolutely hilarious! I'm not normally a big Shia LaBeouf fan but his voice and personality are perfect for the role. The documentary style of the film was genius. Even the soundtrack was good, especially "Stand Tall" by Dirty Heads.
Surfs Up is fun & entertaining show which looks awesome on Blu-Ray!

2008-09-24 - I love this movie. It reeks of humor and wittiness. I did not know Shia was in it until I saw it. He did an excellent job. I was laughing non stop the whole time!
Surfs's Up
2008-09-17 - Surf's up was one of the better CGI movies I have seen in a while that had childish humor that was still fun for adults. Great voice performances by Shia LaBeouf, Zooey Deschanel, Jon Heder, Jeff Bridges and an interesting "mockumentary" style comedy that makes it unique. A perfect movie for surfer fans because it does include some voices of the best in the industry: Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, and Sal Masekela as the SPEN Announcer. As far as Picture Quality it couldn't be better with its Direct Digital Encode but does contain a lot of intentional grain when emphasizing the "mockumentary" interviews or flash backs. Overall I would say this is a fun movie, with a great soundtrack that the kids will love and the adults will enjoy; if you are a fan of CGI's this will definitely be a great addition to your collection.
